What comes to mind first when you hear "DC V2X discharging"?

Is it simply a workaround for vehicles like Teslas that lack native AC V2L capability, where owners are forced to use external DC discharging hardware like the WETOX D2 as a compromise?

In reality, portable V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) is just the entry point of a much broader DC V2X vision. On the global stage, high-power energy transfer through the DC port represents the true core of future energy management.

For home energy resilience (V2H), extreme weather events like severe heatwaves and winter storms frequently cause widespread grid outages. With battery capacities ranging from dozens to over a hundred kilowatt-hours, electric vehicles serve as reliable emergency backup power supplies, effortlessly keeping refrigerators, home heating, and medical equipment running.

For grid integration (V2G), as renewable energy sources like solar and wind expand, grid instability becomes a growing challenge. In markets across Europe and North America with substantial peak-and-valley electricity rate differences, charging EVs at low nighttime rates and feeding power back to the grid during high-demand daytime hours (V2G) helps balance grid loads while creating tangible financial returns for vehicle owners.

Extracting high-voltage DC directly through the vehicle's fast-charging port and converting it externally provides the optimal balance of vehicle design costs, thermal efficiency, and power output.

 

A Unified Global Communication Standard: ISO 15118 and the Next-Gen -20 Protocol

 

Enabling DC discharging requires a unified, highly secure communication language between the vehicle and external discharging equipment.

Outside of Mainland China (GB/T) and Japan (CHAdeMO), the global DC standard has reached near-total unification around CCS. Both Europe's CCS2 and North America's early CCS1 rely on Power Line Communication (PLC) at the architectural level. While Tesla initially relied on its proprietary TPC protocol, opening its design as NACS (SAE J3400) and releasing the official specification naturally aligned its platform with the PLC-based ISO 15118 international standard.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) stands as the world's largest and most authoritative standard-setting body. In the EV sector, ISO 15118 serves as the core international standard defining communication protocols between electric vehicles and charging or discharging equipment.

ISO 15118-20 represents the next-generation protocol within this framework. Its primary breakthrough lies in providing native, standardized architectural support for bidirectional power transfer.

The rollout of this standard is rapidly redefining market access requirements worldwide. Under the EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), all newly built public and private charging infrastructure must support EN ISO 15118-20 starting January 1st next year to achieve market compliance and operational eligibility. In North America, while there is no explicit federal mandate, SAE NACS bidirectional specifications and NEVI funding guidelines have made ISO 15118-20 the recognized universal benchmark for automakers and equipment manufacturers alike.

Major automakers including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and General Motors are integrating the -20 protocol as the foundational standard for V2X power output on their newest EV platforms. DC discharging, long viewed by some as an unofficial workaround, has formally transitioned into a regulated, globally standardized industry framework.
